The Best Pizza in Amsterdam

As Brooklyn transplants, it’s been our mission to find the next best thing to a New-York-style pie in our new city of Amsterdam. We’ve tried all of the supposed “best slices” in the city (it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it) and have compiled our picks for the Top 5 Best Pizzas in Amsterdam.

The restaurants are scattered around the city, so I’ve also included a handy map of the various locations at the end if you’re interested in finding the best pizza nearest you.

Without further ado, let the countdown begin!

#5 – Fuoco Vivo

Pictured: the Diavola (rear) and Peppino (front)

Fuoco Vivo specializes in sourdough pizza with thin, crisp crust that’s topped with fresh ingredients. The interior of the pizzeria doesn’t have a ton of charm, but the small patio out front makes for a nice dining experience when the weather is warm. The ingredients were all very fresh and the crust was extra crispy.

Reservations: Walk-ins are typically welcomed here, but you might want to make a reservation on weekends via their website.
Neighborhood: Oud-West
Address: De Clercqstraat 12, 1052 NC Amsterdam
Price: €10.50-16.00 per pizza (1 pizza per person)
What we ordered: Diavola and Peppino pizzas
For more information: Fuoco Vivo’s website

#4 – Pazzi

Pictured: the Tartufo (rear) and Piccante (front)

Pazzi’s Oud-West location is one of our go-to pizza spots. The menu features several unique pizzas with slight variations from the standard selection. We had the Tartufo and really loved the truffle cream mixed with mascarpone. As an added bonus, the interior of the restaurant is nicely decorated and very cozy during the winter.

Reservations: The Oud-West location takes walk-ins only; reservations are possible at the Jordaan location.
Neighborhood: Oud-West (with another location in the Jordaan neighborhood)
Address: De Clercqstraat 93, 1053 AG Amsterdam
Price: €8.00-15.00 per pizza (1 pizza per person)
What we ordered: Bruschetta; Tartufo and Piccante pizzas
For more information: Pazzi’s website

#3 – Il Sogno

Pictured: the Piccante (front) and Pizza of the Day (rear)

From the outside, you probably wouldn’t guess this store in the middle of the De Wallen neighborhood has some of the best pizza in Amsterdam. Il Sogno calls itself an Italian Concept Store, which explains the variety of products for sale — sweets, wines, olive oil, ice cream, and focaccia are all sold alongside various books, accessories, and other Italian-themed gifts. But the real star of the show is the thin crust, brick oven pizza made with fresh ingredients.

Reservations: No reservations needed; just walk in and order at the counter.
Neighborhood: De Wallen
Address: Koningsstraat 19, 1011 ET Amsterdam
Price: €8.50-12.50 per pizza (1 pizza per person); they also sell a small version for €6.50-10.50
What we ordered: Piccante and the Pizza of the Day
For more information: Il Sogno’s website

#2 – De Pizzakamer

Pictured: the Carchiofi e stracchino (left) and Diavola (right)

The Pijp neighborhood is full of some of the city’s best restaurants, and it’s also home to one of my favorite pizza places, De Pizzakamer. The spicy salami on the Diavola is the best I’ve had of all the pizza places so far — it is melt-in-your-mouth good. The interior of the restaurant is small but very cozy with an energetic atmosphere and lots of locals.

Reservations: Reservations are only possible by phone after 16:00 day-of and are limited to 18:30, after which the entire restaurant is available to walk-ins. No reservations are permitted on Fridays.
Neighborhood: De Pijp
Address: Tweede van der Helststraat 16, 1072 PD Amsterdam
Price: €9.00-14.50 per pizza (1 pizza per person)
What we ordered: Carchiofi e stracchino and Diavola
For more information: De Pizzakamer’s website

#1 – La Perla Pizzeria

Enjoying our pizza from La Perla Pizzeria on the canal. Pictured: the Stracchino e Bufala (left) and Prosciutto San Daniele (right)

For the best pizza in Amsterdam, look no further than the “no frills” restaurant La Perla Pizzeria in the Jordaan neighborhood. These pizzas are on par with some of the best we had in New York. The crust is perfectly crispy and charred thanks to the coal-fired oven. And of course the sauce and toppings are all spot-on.

Reservations: The restaurant is small and very popular, so reservations are recommended and can be made online. If the main restaurant is fully booked, not to worry — La Perla has another location just across the street where you can place an order for take-away pizzas. The annex also has a large communal table and some counter space for those that want to eat then and there, but my suggestion would be to take your pie outside where you can easily claim a canalside bench.
Neighborhood: Jordaan
Address: Tweede Tuindwarsstraat 53, 1015 RZ Amsterdam
Price: €9.50-14.00 per pizza; 1 pizza per person
What we ordered: Stracchino e Bufala, Salame Crudo Piccante Artigianale, and Prosciutto San Daniele pizzas
