An Update on Life in Amsterdam

It’s been a very long time since I’ve posted to The Postcard. We’ve gone on a few particularly memorable trips these past few months, which I’ve been meaning to post about. I didn’t intend to have such a long hiatus, but somehow “real life” took over and distracted me from my beloved travel blog.

These past couple of months have been particularly hectic due to the COVID-19 outbreak. I work in manufacturing, so my work life has been filled with a whole range of new challenges since it started in January. As the virus has continued to spread across Europe, it’s started to impact my personal life as well. Several neighboring countries have now gone into lockdown, and here in the Netherlands businesses have closed and new restrictions have been put in place to ensure everyone is following proper social distancing protocols. I’ve been working from home for a little over two weeks and will continue to do so until at least June 1st, as mandated by the Dutch government.

So, like most everyone else, I’m trying my best to adjust to this new “normal” way of life, spending way more time at home and way less time interacting with the outside world. I’m building new routines and trying to find new ways to break up the day. One things I hope to spend this time on is getting The Postcard up to speed. With all of our future travel plans on hold or canceled, it’s a nice excuse to reflect back on happier times and hopefully sharing something positive for others to enjoy as well.

To kick things off, I want to first share a few photos of Amsterdam from the past couple of weeks. With the various travel restrictions in place, nearly all of the tourists have left the city. Tourists typically double the population of Amsterdam, so things are noticeably quieter, especially in the city center where fewer locals live. The empty streets combined with some (finally!) sunny springtime weather made for a nice ride through the city last weekend.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more posts coming soon!
